Time tracking in Codex

OpenAI's coding agent for the terminal and the editor. Connect it to Temporal.ist and Codex can start timers, log and correct hours, report on any period and draft invoices when you ask.

Connect Codex

Add Temporal.ist with one command, or put it in your Codex configuration.

  1. Add Temporal.ist

Run the command, or add the configuration on the right.

  2. Sign in once

A Temporal.ist sign-in opens. Approve it; the connection then appears under Devices and connections.

  3. Ask

Try “What am I tracking right now?” or “Log an hour on yesterday's review.” Codex picks the right tool.

Terminal
codex mcp add temporalist --url https://temporal.ist/mcp
~/.codex/config.toml
[mcp_servers.temporalist]
url = "https://temporal.ist/mcp"

What you can ask Codex

  • Timers

Start, pause, resume and stop the live timer, and name the task you are on.

“Start a timer on the website relaunch, task: checkout page.”

    start_timerstop_timerpause_timerresume_timerget_active_timerset_current_task

  • Time entries

Log past work, find entries and correct them. Deleting asks you to confirm first.

“Add 45 minutes for yesterday's call with Mapleworks at two.”

    add_time_entrylist_time_entriesedit_time_entrydelete_time_entry

  • Projects and reports

Find or create projects, and get totals per project, day or task for any period.

“How many hours went to the payments API this month, per task?”

    list_projectscreate_projectget_time_report

  • Clients and invoices

Off until you allow it. Manage clients, draft invoices, and send one after you confirm.

“Draft an invoice for Halden Studio for October.”

    list_clientscreate_clientupdate_clientcreate_invoicelist_invoicessend_invoice

Careful by default

  • Confirm before it counts

Deleting an entry and sending an invoice always show a preview first, and need your yes.

  • Client data stays off

Client and invoice tools only work after you allow assistants to handle that data, in Settings.

  • Your sign-in, your scope

Assistants sign in through Temporal.ist like any app. API keys can be limited to reading.

  • Revoke at any time

Each connected assistant is listed under Devices and connections. Revoking signs it out at once.

Using another assistant? Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Kimi and OpenCode.

Questions

More in the documentation

Can Codex track my coding time automatically?

The Temporal.ist desktop app does that, from your file changes. Codex adds the rest in plain language: entries you forgot, corrections, reports and invoices, without leaving the terminal.

Which Temporal.ist plan does Codex need?

Pro or Team. One subscription covers every assistant you connect.

Does Codex see all my data?

Codex sees what it asks for while you use it: projects, sessions and reports. Client and invoice details stay hidden until you allow assistants to handle them under Settings, Integrations.

How do I disconnect Codex?

Revoke it under Settings, Devices and connections in Temporal.ist. Codex is signed out at once and has to sign in again to reconnect.
